Hi Naomi!

Sorry I know nothing about PC monitors. I would suggest that you get a color calibration device though and make sure that the monitor allows for settings to be adjusted. Okay I guess I know something LOL. These are my quick tips:

#1 - DO NOT!!!!! under any circumstances by an HD monitor! If you go into the computer stores the guys may try and push that on you, especially if you say it's for photography. The issue is that they are so good, TOO good in fact, that they can display more colors than can be printed. So if you ever want to show images to a customer that's really bad news! The prints that you make won't have the same punch (it's just not possible to produce the same colors with ink on paper), contrast and saturation and the recipients will be disappointed. I may add this into the blog post later.

#2 - make sure to get a monitor that has a high refresh rate. A low one means you will get eye strain much easier

#3 - make sure the monitor you do get is adjustable, meaning you can manually change the brightness and contrast. If you can't do those two things at a minimum, don't get it.

Does that help? Then you want to get a device to calibrate it such as the Xrite Color Munki. If the color and brightness of the screen are off (not neutral) you'll be correcting your photos opposite. So if you screen is set too bright, all your files will be too dark and you'll find out when you send them to get printed at a lab. If your screen is too yellow - you'll get blue prints. You get the idea.

Hi Darlene! had a quick look through your recommendations! There are several things on your list that are on my "coveted list! I know you are an apple user, but do you have any PC monitors you might recommend? There are now a few more books on my list after browsing through your favs!... that is just what I needed (not really - but I still appreciate it).

Love the format of your newsletter! nice work!

Hi, Darlene
I really liked this peice about your Peruvian calendar. I didn't realise the people there were so poverty striken.
Here in the UK we hear very little about South America, outside of Brazil & Argentina and still little enough about them.
I found what you had to say about their humanity profoundly moving and makes me want to save-up to visit for myself and try to take some aid as well.

Regards
Derek

An excellent review and great to see an author actually following up on comments made. Both of these things have made up my mind to actually buy both ebooks, even though I do use off camera flash extensively - there is always more to learn!

I do understand where Darlene is coming from regarding starting with available light and understanding it's direction and quality - Darlene, why not write your own ebook for C&V based upon your experience of teaching the subject? I'd buy it. Also I'd buy Piets book on lighting setups! So come on guys, get your fingers pushing those keys!

Thanks for a great introduction to the world of photowalks. My daughter and I had a great time really experiencing Whyte Ave and the surrounding area, even though we've been down there to shop on numerous occassions. While looking through everyone's posted photos, I have marvelled at how differently we each saw and capured that same location. It was also great mother-daughter time; what could be better than bonding over photography?
I began the walk with the specific goals of keeping an open mind, and as I am still learning the basics of photography I wanted to work on getting the photo right in the camera. Given the somewhat tricky lighting conditions, and a basic set of equipment, I felt that I certainly did accomplish what I set out to do. I will definitely be joining you again next year, and will be looking for more opportunities between now and then, even if it's to simply take an afternoon by myself.
