Excited to get my new Metro (Metro Continuing Education) newsletter of the upcoming classes for the summer I came across an Edmonton Streetwalk photography class which intrigued me. As I have alove for photography, I thought this would be an excellent adventure and a great way to meet new people and learn new techniques. The instructor for this class was Darlene Hildebrandt. We each had a theme to capture which was a lot of fun. On our second classroom session we discussed and voted on our favourite images. You seem to take for granted what you see each and everyday and I now take my time to visualize from a photographic view. Darlene is a very personable instructor who has a lot to offer in this and any other course that she teaches. I do a lot of night photography. Painting light is new to me and the evening’s learning was about being able to actively witness and involve myself in the activity with others; I saw what needs to happen with the camera, the cable release, aperture and stopwatch. Lighting needs to be away from the camera and directed to the subject’s exterior and where/when possible, interior. Ideally two people are needed for painting light; but, I was able to work a few shots through on my own (as I might do at home). – Ross E, photography tutoring student, and Night ClassField Trip participant

Biggest impact: in viewing one of Darlene’s pictures – the focused and lit fence post with barbed wire leading line (foreground) in front of a silhouetted shed (middle ground) against a tree line and the city’s ambient light (background) – I was treated to an example of creating depth within a photo, something proposed in ‘A Deeper Frame, Creating Deeper Images & More Engaging Experiences’ by David DuChemin,’ a short e-book recommended by Darlene. LOVED the class!!! Honestly probably one of the best I have taken. She did a great job of balancing the needs of very knowledgeable (and not so knowledgeable) in the class!!
